Why do people become mentors?

There are as many reasons for mentoring as there are different personalities. Mentors come in all ages, professions and life experience. Here are some of the common reasons our mentors tell us they became involved with our Vermont Women’s Mentoring Program:

  • Many simply have generous spirits, and they want to give back to their community
  • Some have been mentored previously, and they want to return the favor
  • They might be in recovery themselves and want to support someone on a similar journey
  • Mentors can be civic-minded, faith-oriented or have a commitment to social justice
  • Some people prefer to do community service one-on-one
  • Maybe they have seen our ads over the years, and are finally ready to give mentoring a try
  • Many are drawn to the strong support network that exists for our mentors/mentees
